Tremendous Support For Track Renovation
The July 5th Save Our Track Walkathon, organized by Debbie Cook, and the Meeker Elementary 100 Mile Club Walkathon of last May, put together by Vicky Tate, have generated $27,504.00 for the Track Project! Special kudos to these two ladies whose efforts and commitment to kids is supreme. The support our community, Meeker graduates and many other friends have shown to renovate our 30 year old track and create a safe facility for our students and community is overwhelming.
72 individuals walked the track in Starbuck Stadium on the 5th between 7:00 AM and 11:00 AM. It was a wonderful event filled with enthusiasm and reminiscing of past Meeker graduates. Kathy King-Dickman travelled the furthest to participate. Thanks to the efforts and vision of her father, past Superintendent of Schools Bob King, the existing tartan (synthetic) track was built in 1984-85. Meeker was the envy of neighboring schools as it was one of the first to have such a facility.
The Meeker Swim Team donated an exceptionally generous $15,000.00 to the effort knowing it will benefit the entire community. Many participants solicited personal sponsors for the Walkathon bringing support from the business community as well as many individuals. Ted Stewart, a 1968 Track State Champion, raised $6400 from sponsors with the Meeker Cemetery District being his largest at $5,000.
These funds, an in-kind contribution from Schmueser Gordon Meyer for the project’s engineering/design and certain cost savings will expand the project and fulfill other important needs for the facility. The additional improvements will be posted on this site (www.meekereducationfoundation.org) under the Annual Fund tab as soon as they are identified. Expect this news within a month.
Thank you Meeker!
